Christmas Lunch 2013 Report

Post LunchSunday 9th December

Yesterday 70 Members enjoyed a great Christmas Lunch held once again at the Belair Country Club. The room that we had hired had been decked out in great Christmas decorations by the Belair Country Club which set the tone for the day’s proceedings. Some of the Members arrived extra early, but this only added to the anticipation of what the day would bring.  Each lady was handed a $25.00 gift voucher to be used at Blue Illusion in Norwood and every Member shared in a welcoming drink. All were seated by 1:00pm and David Jarrett, who was MC, kept the proceedings going like clockwork throughout the day.  Needless to say that David also shared a few jokes with us which had us laughing.  If only I could remember them!!!!

As Social Secretary, I talked about the year that was and  that next years “Calendar of Events” is fully booked for weekend runs, but there are still a few mid week runs free. Next year there will be an overnight run to Burra in May 2014, and the organizers are Tony and Robyn Colhoun.  Allen and Dianne Weber would also like to organize a trip to Broken Hill and will let us know as soon as a date has been set next year. Des Long, our President then welcomed all Members and spoke about the Club and how pleasing it is to see so many Members turn out and especially new Members who were individually named.  Des also mentioned that the Club’s financial position is doing well and that is why this year’s Christmas lunch was so heavily subsidised.  Des also thanked the Committee Members for their hard work during the year and a special mention was made of Kari and Chris Soutter who have assisted Des in getting the new Website up as well as their professionalism that they have brought to the Club.  [Presidents note:  And to Poppy Hawkins – a gem – who put the year’s social program together with flair, drive and motivation] Dennis Hawkins spoke about the achievements of each and every Club Member who has been involved in all aspects of Motor Racing during this year.  That is Hillclimbs, Supersprints and Motorkhanas.  Dennis also thanked all the Club Member’s who had volunteered for Flag Marshalling during this year. One of the duties assigned to the Social Secretary is to accumulate the points scoring for every Club and Sporting Event which go towards determining who gets the Club Awards at the end of each year. These Awards are aimed to encourage and acknowledge individual member involvement in club activities. To be eligible for points, each member’s name must be recorded for each Club or sporting event. This Point Scoring table can be viewed on the Club’s new Website. These awards were handed out by Tony Colhoun, Des Long and Dennis Hawkins to the recipients this year. Member of the Year Award is awarded to an individual member for participation in the most club or sporting activities during the year and this year it was Dennis Hawkins. To encourage new Members’ involvement in the Club, the New Member of the Year Award is presented to a new member who accrues the most points.  Pam and John Keith were the new Members who attended most runs and functions this year. The Sporting Member of the Year is selected on the recommendation of the Sporting Secretary, and usually for the Sporting Member who has best represented the MX-5 Club of SA in Motor Sports.  Marque Le Maistre was very surprised to be presented with this trophy this year.  Marque has been involved in Hillclimbs, Supersprints and The 6 Hour Regularity Race, so was a very worthy recipient of this trophy. The Rookie of the Year is awarded to a new Member who has shown improvement in Motor Sports over the year and this year it was Robin Bostock who has taken to Hillclimbs like a duck to water. During the afternoon, Justin Parker once again played music for the crowd and a Lynne Veness and Trevor Elburn had a guest spot playing music and getting the crowd involved.  We would like to thank Justin, Lynne & Trevor for the great job that they did.  Some couples even had a dance towards the latter part of the afternoon! David Jarrett had us all laughing again later in the day with a “pass-the-balloon-to-the-next-person game”.

The two teams were made up of Committee Members and Club Members.  The Club Members won the game by a mile and each received a “Jarro’s Red” bottle of wine.  Of course, the excuse from the Committee Member team was that the Committee works so hard during the year, that by yesterday, we were too exhausted to lift our game!!!! Thank you to Mazda Promotions, Blue Illusion Norwood, Richard Edwards, Adelaide Independent Taxies, Rick & Judy Bruckshaw and the Mazda MX-5 Club of SA who donated 20 prizes in total which were drawn during the afternoon.  Thank you to all who donated and hope those of you won, enjoy them. Thank you to Hermione, Ellen, the Chef’s’ and all other Staff at the Belair Country Club for once again looking after us so well and serving a wonderful Christmas lunch. Thank you to David Jarrett for being our MC for the afternoon.  It made my job so much easier knowing that I could leave the proceedings of the afternoon in David’s capable hands. Thank you to Justin Parker, who by the way is getting married next week to lovely Larissa in Xian, China. Congratulations to you both. Thank you to Lynne and Trevor for their “guest spot”. And lastly, thank you to all our Members who attended and helped make yesterday such a wonderful and successful Christmas Lunch. Merry Christmas to you and your families and see you all in 2014. A few of the photos taken yesterday.
